....... You spelt tier wrong -_-
Although you can beat some newbs with Pika, when you play in a competitive 1vs1 tourny, you will find that higher tier characters just have more capibilities of kicking ass. (If you can play them right.)
Read below. The facts ooze out at you. It's something I wrote up awhile ago, directed torwards the Ovga messege board. If any flames erupt in this discussion - byebye tier topic.
******Tier Explanation******
Introduction to tiers -
"So what are tiers?" You ask. Many old veterans of the smash community shudder at this question. The concept has been twisted countless times and the very mention of the word gets a crowd going. The smashers at gamefaqs have a particular problem with this. (Mostly due to the popularity of the site.) I wish to let all be told now, to clear up any rumors and inform others of the interesting system.
What are tiers -
By definition, a tier is a rank given to the characters. This rank was voted on by the most important experts of the game in the backroom at www.smashboards.com They determined the rank that the characters would recieve, based on a character's stats(ex: weight, recovery), possible combos(ex: Jiggily Puff's wall of pain), and other abilities(ex: Falco's down+A spike). The tier list has been determined as follows with top being the best and bottom being the worst.
=TOP=
Sheik
Fox
Marth
=UPPER=
Falco
Peach
Captain Falcon
Samus
Jigglypuff
=HIGH=
Ganondorf
Mario
Dr. Mario
Luigi
=MIDDLE=
Link
Pikachu
Ice Climbers
Roy
Zelda
Young Link
Yoshi
=LOW=
Ness
Donkey Kong
Kirby
Mr. Game&Watch
Mewtwo
=BOTTOM=
Bowser
Pichu
This list was made to inform others which characters have the best chance at winning on very high skill levels. If someone wasn't aware that Marth was this good, they would see this list and realize that Marth has great potential.Remember that this only holds true if the characters are performing at the best possible skill level.
Tiers do not account for -
Free for all or (in some cases) team matches
Items
Unequal skill from the players.
Some cases in which a stage gives an advantage or disadvantage to the character(and the character's moves)
Counter character matchups(explained later)
Computers(you would not see a computer performing Fox's infinite combo )
How do tiers apply to me and why should I care -
Maybe you should care. Maybe you shouldn't. If you are serious about winning a tournament, you better listen up. Many people have a favorite character, and nothing will change their decision. This is a great attitude to have and I respect it. The question is, Can they use their favorite character well? If a player is good enough, all characters can be used well. The problem is, how well? As I have said before, a "perfect skill" high tier character has many advantages in stats and combos. If you are using a Roy against someones Fox, (assuming you are both very skilled with your characters) the Fox has the upperhand. Some of Fox's advantages include speed and shine combos. If you would like to ask experts on a charactrer's pros and cons, contact an expert from www.smashboards.com
Personally, before I looked at the tier list very closely, my favorite characters had been Falco and Dr. Mario. It is merely a coincidence that these characters are listed as high and upper tier. The Falco had been a favorite of mine since I was a younger casual gamer. After learning falco's advantages I decided to stick with him and become really good. As for Dr. Mario, I had seen videos from a group of Smashers with Dr. Mario. I really liked the way he was played and I decided to take up the doc as a secondary character. When I had compared these characters to the tier list, it made me interested in some of the other major characters such as Ganondorf, Peach, Marth, Sheik, ect. I understand that with practice, my Marth could surpass my Falco. I decided to use Marth as a secondary character, and keep the competitvely close Falco as a main. Now that I have taken the time to understand high tiers, I look back at bottom tiers and compare. Bowser can not match many of the possibilities of Marth. It's jsut that simple.
Why have the tiers changed -
Many people ask, if the characters stay the same, why do the tiers stay the same. Tiers are made by players, you must remember. Players find new strategies and combos. In one case, a major Ganondorf player was able utilize the character well. When others had studied the character, they realized new posibilities. In an old version of the tier list, this discovery had moved Ganondorf from mid tier to top tier. As it is now, the tier list seems to be pretty accurate. It is always hard to tell for sure, for skill is always the number one factor in any match. The only change that is currently being debated is moving Ness from bottom to mid tier. As it sounds, it is not much of a change and won't revoulutionise anything to terribly much (;
Counter Characters -
I will dicuss this breifly mainly because I no little about this topic. It has been determined that certain characters play better against particular characters. For example, Peach counters Falco and Fox. This is because some of Fox's best moves and combos (shining) can be easily dealt with Peach's abilities and moves (short jump floating). For more information about counters, head over to www.smashboards.com I believe that this is a somewhat popular discussion over there.
In closing -
Although the tier list doesn't effect the game directly, you may find yourself with a better character by learning more about the best and playing the best.
